there in lies a lot of this country's ills
most in the teaching profession have always been socialists..therefore are ashamed of British history...and not included in the curriculum..certaintly was in my case...and that was in the 80s

I’m 38 mate.
I missed most of year 11 after being expelled but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t covered, or very little if it was.
If it is now fair play. It wasn’t my parents thought but it should have been something they insisted I watched. I suppose a lot of teens can be fuckers and not interested but it is way too important not be learned about.
If I could go back in time I would have a hell of lot more time for my grandparents war stories...in fact anyone’s account who lived through it.

How old are you Stepney? I'm 31, was definitely taught at my school, although in fairness not until year 10/11, and not in any real depth.

I’ve been watching the last few weeks after getting into World War 2 in colour on Netflix (also decent btw). I’m up to episode 17 at the moment (you can also watch it on the UKTV Play app).
Absolutely superb docuseries. In fact the best I’ve ever seen.
I’m amshamed to admit that I knew very little about what went on during WW2. I thought I knew a fair bit but blimey some of what happened beggars belief, as well as being proper fascinating.
A fucking crime that WW2 (and WW1) isn’t taught at school. Just having to watch this series alone would teach so many about what people in this country (and others) went through.

My brother was researching his father in law who was captured in Crete and spent 4 years as a POW in Germany
Will be of interest to some of you I will post the Stalag 18a website.
Subject: Gunner Alfred George Bonner Stalag18A
Dear Ian,
I came across your website by chance over Christmas - and was astonished to see my Father-in -Law, Alf in your opening photo. He is at the back on the right wearing a shirt. My Wife Anita (his only child) recognised him immediately. Like many of his generation, he spoke little of his experiences and only to me, over a quiet pint over a period of time. Having explored your site a lot of the pieces now make sense.
He was one of 5 Brothers (and a Brother-in-Law) all East Londoners, who saw active service and returned - Alf was the only POW. He Volunteered in 1940 (aged 25) to follow his Brother into the RA and after training in Yorkshire left Liverpool for Egypt Via the Cape then Crete and finally Greece.
I don't know his AA regiment - He was a Bofors Gunnner guarding an RAF Airstrip and had a couple of near misses being continually straffed by ME109's. His battery was order to retreat and make a stand at the Corinth Canal. He was taken prisoner by German Paratroopers"a real tough lot but quite decent once we surrendered". The survivors of his Battery were handed over to an SS detachment. They were taken to a beach grouped against a Cliff. Heavy MG's were positioned. Fully expecting the worse, they exchanged cigarettes and said their goodbyes.
Then a Wermacht Officer appeared who outranked the SS Officer, ordered them to be taken away as POW's.
I dont know what work party he was in, but he worked on Construction of the Dam nearby. His worse memory was of Jewish (or Russian?) inmates being worked to death opening Cement Bags and mixing Concrete. They did not last too long and as Alf and others marched past they would try and throw a few scraps of bread, which in the latter stages, was ill-spared and at some risk of punishment.
Finally after Liberation by the Americans, he flew back to England in the Bomb Bay of a Lancaster.

'The men were taken to garages and barns, the women and children were led down this road, and they were driven into this church. Here, they heard the firing as their men were shot. Then they were killed too.'
I've seen this a stack of times, everyone should, but 'then they were killed too' doesn't quite do justice to being burned alive. I can't remember, do they omit this detail ? Just wondering if it was considered too shocking at the time the doc was made.

Thanks for the positive comments, I thought WHO appreciated this series from previous comments down the years.
I feel compelled to watch it again whenever it's on. Just watched the Blitz one again and hard to imagine what it was like having 76 straight days of bombing, with, at one stage, 1,500 separate fires burning - no wonder they ran out of water!
The spirit of the locals comes oozing out with their interviews mind. I loved the story of the old lady who came out of a near demolished building very partially dressed, who was advised she might want to re-think what she had on. So she went back in and came out with a hat on!
Priceless...and that goes for the whole series.
